     VANUATU the name  is derived from the   word vanua ("land" or "home"), which occurs in several Austronesian languages, and the word tu ("stand").Together the two words indicate the independent status of   the country. Vanuatu is self-sufficient in many aspects, with most of its food produce being organic.


    VANUATU'S INDEPENDENCE

     A former joint British-French protectorate, Vanuatu became an independent Republic in 1980.

    The remains of WW2  base on Aore Island, including bunkers and gun emplacements, can still be seen on the island today.


    The island was also home to a coconut plantations, which were established by the British in the late 1800s with coconuts that still stand today.
