Traditional Weaving Experience

Spend time with the local mummas on Aore Island and learn how traditional Vanuatu weaving is done using locally collected materials.

This is a hands-on cultural experience, not simply a demonstration. The mummas will show you how the leaves are prepared and the techniques used to weave useful and decorative items, then help you try the process yourself.

Weaving knowledge has been passed through generations and remains part of everyday life in Vanuatu. It’s a relaxed opportunity to learn, ask questions and spend time with local women while experiencing a side of Aore Island that you won’t find on a standard sightseeing tour.

The Experience

Your experience begins with an easy walk through the tropical jungle to the beach and a traditional nakamal, where you'll sit with the local mummas and learn the art of Vanuatu weaving.

The experience is conducted outdoors, surrounded by the natural environment of Aore Island. The walk is easy, but the ground can be uneven, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

Once at the nakamal, settle in and learn how local materials are prepared and woven using techniques passed down through generations. You’ll have the opportunity to try weaving yourself, ask questions and spend time with the women who continue these traditions today.
